When it comes to creating simple, engaging videos for social platforms and websites, there are literally dozens of apps to choose from. Here are some of our top recommendations.
One of the simplest and fastest apps for putting together a social media video. Quik was developed by GoPro, and works on both Android and iPhones.
Don’t be fooled by its simplicity. Quik can produce sophisticated video stories. You can choose from a wide range of themes, add captions, and also add music – either from the app’s extensive royalty-free music library, with transitions timed to the beat of your chosen track – or from your own sources via direct download or cloud servers such as Dropbox and Google Drive.
Here’s a Quik example shot by our manual’s contributors Chow How Ban and Thasong Asvasena inside a Thai temple during a traditional hammer massage.
Another example is this photo montage about an abandoned area of an Algerian city being turned into a public garden by local residents. The video, created by Radio Saida journalists using Quik, had more than a quarter of a million views within a week of posting in March 2018.
You can also add a voiceover to a Quik video if you import it via ‘My Music’. And you can save your video in square, landscape or portrait aspect ratios.

If you own an iPhone, iMovie is one of the most popular apps for creating simple videos. Watch the following tutorial to understand all its functions.
This video by our Manual contributor Sara Pacia is an example of what you can achieve with iMovie.
While the titles are limited in iMovie, and captions aren’t available, you can add these later in a different app – like DIY Subtitle.
Quik and iMovie are great apps to get you started. They’re both free, and Quik works on iOS and Android. But there are lots of other apps to explore – many of which are also free or inexpensive – to give exactly the look you need for your video.
Try these out and see what you think!
